Come on an adventure with Textile Tutor Jan Preston. Students must have general sewing machine experience, as this is a technique class.
During the Surf Coast Arts Inc Postcard Exhibition, President Julie Dyer was questioned about the techniques used to create her work. Julie is a beginner in this technique, so we have invited the talented Jan Preston to take you through the process of machine embroidery on water soluble solvy fibre – design, complete the sewing, then dissolve in water to leave behind the machine stitches.
Student Requirements: (equipment will remain in the space overnight)
Bring a sewing machine in good working order, attachments and sewing manual.
A free motion foot specifically for the intended machine, otherwise you can use a straight stitch.
An embroidery slimline hoop – 25cm, laced over with a fine ribbon/bias binding for gripping - the process can be managed without, but it will help you handle it with greater ease.
Cotton threads of your choice (no silks or shiny embroidery unless you are familiar)
Machine needles size 12 or 14 (can be purchased in a mixed pack)
A small bucket, towel and working hair dryer if you have one.
We will have access to hot running water, a flat bench space and good lighting.
Updates and other information will be provided at least a week before the workshop.
COVID 19 Protocols We request participants to take a RAT prior to arriving at the workshop. Please respect the artist and fellow participants by wearing a mask.
About Jan Preston From a very young age Jan sewed on her mother’s treadle sewing machine. She has been a Quilter and Textile Artist since the 1980’s, and has since enjoyed tutoring students. Jan has a passion for collecting, observing nature, photography, texture - and colour has been an important inspiration for her work. She also collects and restores old fabrics and family collections, recovered items from the past to be created into Memorabilia Waggas, Japanese inspired stitched cloth and ‘Memory Cloth’ - slow stitching and connecting them together with script. Jan loves to share her knowledge with others and encourage all levels and skills into the world of both Textiles and Quilting.
